The Benefits of Flexible Scheduling for Your Student
There are many cases in which flexible scheduling is the best solution for a particular student's needs. Your child may have sports or team practices that take up a large portion of the day that they would usually spend in school, an acting or modeling career that requires large chunks of their day, or other responsibilities that require them to have flexible scheduling options in order to accommodate all of their needs. Flexible scheduling, however, isn't just a solution for students who are making incredible strides in their chosen hobbies and fields. It's also a great option for many students whose families simply want to see them reach the highest possible level of academic success.
Students learn at the time when they are most academically capable. Your energy ebbs and flows throughout the day. Your child's energy levels do the same with higher productivity during a certain time of day. Scheduling your child's academic classes during those times will substantially increase their odds of academic success from increasing assignment completion rates to improving the odds that your child will retain information.
You get a better academic achievement and a lower dropout rate with flexible scheduling. Students feel better able to handle the demands that are made of them when they're able to construct schedules that work with their needs rather than having to fit themselves to a traditional school schedule.
Students experience an increase in engagement. During their less productive times, students are less likely to engage with the curriculum. When they work during the hours that work best for them, however, students are able to engage more completely increasing their benefits from the class.
High need students may benefit even more from flexible scheduling. High need students--those with ADD, ADHD, autism, and a variety of other learning disabilities--are often better able to perform during specific hours of the day. Fitting their instructional time into those hours is a better way to make the most out of their learning time.
Flexible scheduling increases the odds of a good night's sleep. Many teens don't fall asleep early enough at night and find that they have to get up way too early the next morning. Flexible scheduling allows your teen to get more sleep when they need it most leading to greater overall health and a greater understanding of the academic material they take in each day.
