Growth Mindset: We Start the Trend
All of us approach our life and work from a perspective that we call mindset. Whether we demonstrate a fixed mindset or growth mindset will go a long way toward shaping how we handle life's challenges. While a fixed mindset attributes success to talent and innate qualities, a growth mindset understands that there are other factors in play.
“[With] a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point” (Mindset).
By uprooting the false premises of a fixed mindset (“I just don’t have the ability”) and instilling our students with a growth mindset (“I don't have the ability YET”), we here at Halstrom Academy will enhance their chances of future success.
We imbue our students with a "can do" attitude, but we can't do it alone. While we certainly take steps in the classroom to promote a growth mindset, we know that the clearest call comes from a united support system.
To impact school culture and enable any mindset to grow, we have to reach all facets of the community and its members. Thus, thinking about how to foster mindsets at the student, teacher, and parent level is important (Getting Smart).
Here at Halstrom Academy, we realize that positive change must start with us; however, we partner with our families to create a united front. Although we hold ourselves accountable as the ultimate source of the message in the classroom regarding success, we encourage all members of our faculty, staff, and school community to join together in providing a universal voice of encouragement.
Together, we can help our students understand the possibilities of a growth mindset and that success is not something you are born with but something that evolves over time with effort and practice. With this strong foundation, our students will continue this belief system and achieve success in college and in their future endeavors.
