One-to-one Personalized Instruction

Engaging, connecting and learning on a deeper level

One-to-One School

Today kids can get lost or bored in the traditional classroom. Hiding at the back of the class, not engaging with the teacher, tuning out instruction, etc. At Halstrom, your student is our focus. The one student, one teacher model is at the core of our Halstrom Academy program. Because of our emphasis on personalization and customization to your students needs, Halstrom has become a pioneer of a new way of learning.

Optimum learning occurs in a caring and nurturing environment where your student actively participates in the process – that’s a One-to-One School. At Halstrom, student and teacher work together to set and achieve learning expectations and personalized goals for each one-to-one 50-minute class session.

The format of these one-on-one sessions increases your student’s participation and responsibility in the learning process because of the focused interaction between student and teacher. Confidence and respect are the foundation of our student and teacher relationships. Teachers become mentors as they provide personalized support based on your student’s unique talents and struggles.

The 1:1 Difference

One-to-One SchoolIn education, one size does not fit all. When an instructor tailors a teaching method to the unique needs of your student, the chances of learning success increase exponentially. Halstrom’s instruction is based on the research of University of Chicago’s Dr. Benjamin Bloom, which proves that learning occurs at a rate of 98% with one-to-one interaction. Since being founded in 1985, Halstrom has helped over 16,000 students reach their potential; many of whom have gone on to attend well-reputed colleges and universities such as Stanford, UC Berkeley, Penn State, NYU, USC, and more.

Teaching Strategy

  • The individualized instruction, and the approach and strategies used by each instructor are unique and tailored specifically to meet the strengths and weaknesses of your student. It’s not news that everyone learns differently. Learning styles include:

  • Kinesthetic
    Tactile
    Auditory
    Visual
Combination of all of the above

Fully Customized Learning Plan

Our team of experts work with students and families to develop a customized learning plan that fits each student’s unique needs. In addition, students create their own class schedules to accommodate their busy lives. At Halstrom, a student’s education is personalized to what learning method works best for them and the time of day that they learn optimally.

Traditional schools based on class size need to teach to the “middle” which is only optimal for a small percentage of the classroom. If students fall to the right of the spectrum, they can get bored, easily distracted, tuned out or even get in trouble. The students to the left might get intimidated, fall behind academically, and become less interested.

At traditional schools, students are forced to move on to new lessons even if they didn’t fully understand the previous lesson. At Halstrom, students learn at their own pace because they must prove their understanding of each lesson before moving to the next. We call this content mastery. For topics that students find more difficult to learn, the teacher will slow down the pace of instruction. Alternatively, if the student demonstrates proficiency with a lesson more quickly, the pace increases.

In one-to-one instruction, your child will receive a tailored education with uninterrupted individual attention and fewer distractions. This means the time your child spends in a classroom will be higher quality and more effective. In one-to-one instruction, the teacher is able to get to know the student on a deeper level. This allows an instructor to adapt to their particular learning style and adjust lessons accordingly. The instructor knows immediately if a student is struggling with a concept or understands it enough to move forward, whereas in a traditional setting, it sometimes takes a whole testing cycle for the teacher to even know where a student is academically and even then has little flexibility to act on it when managing a larger classroom. Also, in a typical classroom setting, instruction is generally not adjusted or tailored to each student individually. When children are receiving instruction that is tailored to their learning preference, the experience is more enjoyable and communication is more effective.

When it comes to education, one size does not fit all. One-to-one education is a great option due to more individual attention, less distractions, improved communication, and increased flexibility.
